If you are a classic jazz lover and you are looking for a place to relax, enjoy music on a Friday night, Jazz Cellar is a place that you must go.
Friday nights in Perth have always been boring for me. Reach home early, dinner alone, nowhere to go, and it was the same last Friday. However, this time, I had a sudden craving for live jazz music, and I text Jillian for a recommendation. She said her friend recommended her Jazz Cellar, so I Google on it, and this immediately captured my attention:
the entry to the cellar is though one of the old style phone boxes. Go
through the door and the back of the phone box opens onto a landing,
from where you descend into the cellar.
Without a second thought, I jumped into a taxi and head straight to the place, and it was exactly how the website described it. The entrance is through a old-school telephone booth.
The very cool entrance
Just like the name, the bar is actually in a cellar, small and cozy, and surprisingly it was pretty pack when I got there (around 6:20pm), even though the gig only starts at 8pm.
Reminds me of Actors Studio Dataran Merdeka...
BYO...... Food~!!
One cool thing about Jazz Cellar is that, you can BYO not only your drinks, but food as well! Yeah, first time I've ever heard that, so I brought a pizza with a can of Pepsi, and Derrick, 1 of the kind person, showed me a seat in front so that I can take pictures.
Fabulous Music and Atmosphere
The night was filled with fabulous music and happy crowd. The band members were all more than 50 years old (I guess...) except the bassist (very talented young man), and they were fantastic. They played it so naturally, and everything flows smoothly, during songs and between songs, just exactly how jazz music should be.
I really enjoyed the night. It could be the best night I've had in
Perth, though I went there alone, I didn't feel lonely because of the
friendly crowd. What I love most about Jazz Cellar is that it's so original, natural, non-commercial. The cellar is not well-renovated and decorated so that they can charge the audiences more, yet it's small, cozy and comfortable; The band was so natural that you know they enjoy playing jazz and entertaining everybody, rather than showing off their talents and earn money; Everybody in the crowd were there to enjoy the music, not those who act classy and think that they are classy because they are in a jazz gig. If people felt like dancing, they stood up and dance, whether they know how to dance or not. Well, who cares? It's all about relax and enjoy~
Will definitely try to go again before I leave Perth :)
Amazing band members

Hi
A great story and some good pictures. Do you mind if I link them to my Facebook group, The Jazz Cellar. I don't know how to do this but I'm sure it's possible.
