Today, Malaysia celebrates 51 years of independence.
2 days ago, Avril Lavigne "successfully" had her concert in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Why "successfully"? Thanks to the ministry. Check out the news at the local press: but check out the news in foreign press as well: If Malaysian officials' logic holds, Avril Lavigne is sexier than Gwen Stefani and the Pussycat Dolls and just as potentially morally corrupting as Beyoncé.
Of course it is always easy to say things like "We have our principals in our countries", "We shouldn't care about what other people talk/think about us, 'cause we can't control how they think", or "Their reports are not true/ bias". But you just can't ignore the fact that there are impacts on how people perceive Malaysia, even from these small matters.
I'm just imagining 2 foreigners who were visiting Bangkok, saying "You know what? Arvil is having her concert in KL next week, why not we go for the concert, and check out KL at the same time". Then they went online, googled "Avril Lavigne Malaysia Concert", they saw these news, and they said "I didn't know Malaysians are like that, let's check out Singapore then".
Well, still glad that it happened in the end.
